A copolymerization process for copolymerising carbon monoxide and an olefin employs a catalyst comprising a Group VIII metal, for example palladium, and a bidentate ligand having general formula R<1>R<2>M<1>—R—M<2>R<3>R<4> where R represents a bridging group, M<1> and R<2> represent nitrogen, arsenic, antimony or, preferably phosphorus, and R<1>, R<2>, R<3> and R<4> preferably represent phenyl groups each having an alkoxy substituent and a sulphonyl substituent -SO2-OH or a salt or ester derivative. Such catalysts afford good reaction rates and good recycling properties.
