A refuse container has a self-latching rectangular hinged lid which is rectangular in plan-view. The lid has a series of grooves (10) parallel with the long sides (1), and an upward camber between the two sides. Seen from the side elevation, the lid has a cambered surface which is at a maximum approx. three quarters of the distance from the hinge.
