A mechanical hydraulic pump has two meshing gear wheels (12, 14) with asymmetric front and rear tooth flanges. The two gear wheels touch with their respective front flanges (16) while the rear flanges (22) have virtual touching points (20). This reduces the pulsations in the output pressure. The effective angle between the line joining the grip points (19, 20) of the front flanges and the tangent (28) through the rolling points of the pumping action is greater than the corresponding angle for the virtual grip points for the trailing edges.
