PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a favorable combustion reduced NOX generation amount in either of a stratified combustion and homogeneous combustion, in the injection in a cylinder type spark ignition internal combustion engine provided with an exhaust gas recirculation device. SOLUTION: An exhaust gas recirculation device 4 has a first exhaust gas recirculation route A and a second exhaust gas recirculation route B for communicating an engine exhaust system 3 with an engine suction system 2, and a cooler 4e is provided in the first exhaust gas recirculation route and at the stratified combustion time of an injection into a cylinder type spark ignition internal combustion engine 1a, mainly the exhaust gas is recirculated by the use of the second exhaust gas recirculation route and at the homogeneous combustion time, mainly the exhaust gas is recirculated by the use of the first exhaust gas recirculation route.
