<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the heat generation in the vicinity of an optical modulating means and also to improve the reflection characteristic at a cross dichroic prism and a cross dichroic mirror. SOLUTION: Light in a random polarizing direction is all converted into s-polarized light and is emitted by a polarizing converting element 140 at this projection type display device. Also, linearly polarized light which is respectively made as an object for modulation is made incident on three liquid crystal light valves 250, 252 and 254, and p-polarized green light and s-polarized red light and blue light are made incident on the cross dichroic prism 260. Thus, for instanceλ/2 phase difference plates 310 and 312 are respectively provided on an optical path before the first and third liquid crystal light valves 250 and 254. As the position of theλ/2 phase difference plate, various positions on the optical path between dichroic mirrors 210 and 212 and the cross dichroic prism 260 can be available.</p> |
