PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-sized inexpensive color image pickup element and color image pickup device which can pick up colored images with high picture qualities by preventing the occurrence of colored Moire caused by a periodic color coding arrangement. SOLUTION: A color image pickup device is provided with a CCD image pickup element 4 the color codings of which are arranged in a random arrangement meeting a prescribed condition, such as the minimum density condition with respect to color, etc. a digital processing circuit 7 which performs color separation based on the random color coding arrangement, and a storing means composed of a mask ROM or EEPROM 17 which stores the arrangement data about the random color coding arrangement.
