The invention relates to a method for producing transgenic organisms including bacteria, fungi, plants and animals, or transgenic cells which exhibit an increased production of steroid glycoside, steroid alkaloid and/or sterol glycoside compared to that of wild-type organisms or cells. The inventive method involves the transfer of DNA sequences which code for sterol glycosyl transferases. The invention also relates to applications of the organisms produced or of the steroid glycosides, steroid alkaloids and/or sterol glycosides synthesized in or by the organisms or cells. Said applications are useful in the pharmaceutical and foodstuff industries as well as for protecting plants.
