The key has a grip part (2) and a key shaft (3 which can be retracted within the housing (4) of the grip part when not in use, with locking of the key shaft in its retracted or extended position. The key shaft has an attached head part (7) lying within the housing of the grip part, provided with a cog wheel (9), displaced along a linear toothed rack (16). The key shaft is acted on by a spring (12), which is tensioned upon the retraction of the key shaft, for biasing the latter into the extended position.
