PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten time required for readout by allowing an error correcting circuit to output an error state signal indicating whether an error has occurred after syndrome generation and then outputting readout data again according to whether there is an external request. SOLUTION: The error correction circuit 10 sequentially receives data of one sector read out of a memory array and a syndrome generating circuit 11 generates a syndrome according to them. An error decision circuit 12 checks whether the generated syndrome is all '0' to decide whether the readout data has an error. Further, a correction position information generating circuit 13 generates position information on the bit where the error is present from the generated syndrome. When the three bytes outputted from the correction position information generating circuit 13 all match one another, a coincidence detecting circuit 14 decides that the bytes have the error and outputs the readout data again according to whether there is an external request.
