PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a filter, which has a large total transmission coefficient and is very large in the ratio of polarized luminous flux in one direction where transmission is maximum and polarized luminous flux in the vertical direction where attenuation is maximum, and its manufacture. SOLUTION: This invention relates to a transmitting and polarizing filter including a substrate 1 and a partially metal-coated grating 2 that the substrate 1 holds. This grating 2 is a holography grating 3 having a profile having alternate surfaces 4 and 5 with plus slopes 4 and minus slopes 5 and the surfaces having the plus or minus slopes are partially coated with metal. This filter is manufactured by forming the holography grating on the substrate, coating the holography grating with the metal, and lastly machining part of the metal coating.
