PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To switch a display mode into longitudinal display or lateral display automatically in response to a selected application. SOLUTION: The electronic device is provided with a ROM 8 having a program section 80 storing a plurality of applications, a display section 2 having a rectangular display window to display various kinds of information sets, a key entry section 6 that selects activation of application, a CPU 4 that executes operation control the entire device such as input and output and various arithmetic processing or the like, and a display control section 3 that controls display on the display section 2. The CPU 4 executes display expansion processing on the basis of information as to display direction set to a selected application by a key entry section 6, writes the display expansion data to a display RAM area 30 according to longitudinal display management or lateral display management by the display control section 3 to display data longitudinally or laterally on the display section 2.
