The invention relates to a method for the dihydroxylation of olefins using transition-metal catalysts for producing monofunctional, bifunctional and/or polyfunctional 1,2 diols of the formula (I): R1R2C(OH)-C(OH)R3R4. According to the inventive method, olefins are reacted with molecular oxygen in the presence of an osmium, ruthenium and manganese compound or a mixture thereof in water, or in a solvent mixture which contains water, at a pH value of between 7.5 and 13. The catalyst is activated by the addition of an amine, i n order to improve the selectivity of the dihydroxylation reaction. The resulting diols are used as solvents, as starting materials for polyesters a nd other polymers, as intermediate products for agrochemicals, cosmetics or detergents, or in the form of their esters as synthetic lubricants and emollients. The method can be carried out simply and with a high degree of selectivity and is advantageous from an economical and ecological standpoint .
