671,055. Hedge cutters. FOSTER, G. E., and CODE DESIGNS, Ltd. Aug. 31, 1950. [June 21, 1949] No. 16418/49. Class 131. A hedge cutter comprises a stationary member having teeth projecting at right angles from a straight back portion along the length of which a doubleedged single blade knife is reciprocated to provide a shearing action with each tooth successively. As shown, the rear edge of a tapered, movable knife 14, bolted to a bracket 17, slides in a groove in a guide rail 12, rivetted or welded to the back portion of the stationary member which is provided with a handle 24 and tapering teeth 11. The bracket 17 is grooved to slidably engage the guide rail 12 and an operating rod 20, bolted at 21 to the bracket 17, extends through' a bracket 22 provided with a roller 23. Springs 26, 28 act as shock absorbers at each end of the movement of the knife and a spring-urged ball maintains shearing contact between the chamfered cutting edges 15, 16 of the knife and the teeth 11. A knurled screw 32, engaging a screw-threaded aperture in the bracket 17, may be rotated into engagement with the guide rail 12 to lock the movable knife when the hedge-cutter is not in use. In modifications, the teeth and the movable knife are not tapered and the teeth are formed of special steel and secured to the back portion. |
