The container interior space (4) incorporates a receiving basket (7) for the fuel elements. The basket (7) features separate quadrangular chutes (8) for the elements and is made up of basket layers located on top of each other which each layer consisting of neutron-absorbing light metal plates joined via plug connections. The basket layers are equipped with central neutron-absorbing plates (9a) which run from a wall section of the container jacket (3) through the middle axis (21) of the interior space (4) through to a diametrically opposite wall section.
