PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a coating composition which is used for forming clear coating films, has good weather resistance, and has good adhesivity between a patterned coating film layer and a clear coating film layer and between a base coat layer and a clear coating layer, to provide a method for forming the coating film by using the coating material for forming the clear coating films, and to provide a coated plate. SOLUTION: This coating composition used for forming clear coating films is used, when a base coat, a patterned coating film, and a clear coating film are sequentially formed on a substrate to be coated. Therein, the surface tension of the coating liquid of a coating material for the clear coating film is not larger than the surface tensions of the dry coating films of coating materials for forming the base coat and the patterned coating film, respectively. When the thickness of the dry coating film obtained from the coating materials for forming the clear coating films is 10μm, the dry coating film has a UV light transmittance of 0 to 50% in wavelengths of 300 to 320 nm. The method for forming the patterned coating film and the coated plate use the coating material for forming the clear coating film as a top coating film for the uppermost surface layer.
