PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide servo data of the read channel of a magnetic data storage device having an improved S/N. SOLUTION: The read channel network of a magnetic data storage device receives an analog signal representing user data and servo data usable to position a read/write magnetic head. To improve the S/N of the servo data, the user data and servo data are processed individually in the read channel network and then the improved positioning of the read/write head in the magnetic data storage device is enabled. To generate a sideband signal, the servo data is inputted to a frequency multiplier (or multiplier) together with a vibratory reference signal (or reference signal) and its output has band width nearly equal to a sideband and is passed through a band-pass filter having substantially the same center frequency with the sideband. Further, the output signal of the band-pass filter is processed by an envelope detector 230, an AD converter 240, and a digital filter so as to generate a digital signal representing a servo signal.
