PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate to record time information corresponding to respective modes in the case of having a plurality of recording modes by generating and recording time information in a track unit in a 1st recording mode and recording the pieces of the time information generated in the 1st recording mode skipping the prescribed number of pieces in a 2nd recording mode. SOLUTION: This method has a 1st recording mode in which two tracks are recorded with one rotation of a rotary head 100 and a 2nd recording mode in which two tracks are recorded with three, five or seven rotation of the head 100. In the 1st recording mode, time information is generated in a track unit and recorded, and in the 2nd recording mode, every third, fifth or seventh track unit of information of the time information generated in the 1st recording mode is recorded. A control circuit 140 detects the type of input data, a maximum transfer rate, etc., decides a recording mode and sets the operation modes of a record and reproduction signal processing circuit 102 and a servo circuit 106.
