Vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) comprises a first mirror structure (2) of first conductivity type, which has an active layer. The second mirror structure (4) of second conductivity type is formed on the active layer. Electrical contacts for the mirrors and a dielectric mirror are then formed over an emitting surface. An Independent claim is also given for a method of forming the above VCSEL.
