PURPOSE: A method for 3-electrode surface discharge PDP(Plasma Display Panel) is provided to be capable of reducing the erase discharge time inserted between sustain pulses to increase the frequency of the sustain pulses by distributing serial erase discharges into several sustain periods. CONSTITUTION: In the method, 1 frame is divided into X sub fields, cells of a total screen are formed of 2 row electrodes and 1 column electrode, and gray scale is displayed by a sub frame method. When the number of sustain pulse required to display M gray scale is N, the number of sustain pulse is adjusted to a multiple of N and then the number of any row electrodes is adjusted to a multiple of 2 in accordance with the adjusted number of sustain pulses. Then, serial erase pulses required to an addressing process of the sub frame method are distributed into several sustain periods in accordance with the number of sustain pulses adjusted in the step.
