A 3-phase brushless motor which includes a rotor which has permanent magnets so as to provide P pieces of magnetic poles (wherein P is an integer not smaller than 2) and a stator which has a plurality of coils arranged into, for instance, an approximately triangular form or an approximately trapezoidal form, wherein an angular distance between adjacent coils is (360/P) x (5/3) degrees, and three position detection devices which detects the position of the rotor are arranged with angular intervals of (360/P) x (2/3) degrees in ranges where the coils are not placed, whereby the shapes and arrangement of the coils can be optimized and the reduction of the number of coils and the improvement of motor characteristics can be realized.
