PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a mildew-proofing agent having mildew-proofing activities and excellent in water resistance and sustained releasability by allowing an inorganic layered compound to absorb and store an a mildew-proofing component. SOLUTION: This mildew-proofing agent is obtained by allowing an inorganic layered compound (preferably, having silica 1, alumina 2, oxygen 3, hydrogen and zinc 4, and constituted of a prismatic structure, which preferably includes the zinc) to absorb and store a mildew-proofing component 6 (preferably the one having a small molecular diameter, preferably copper, zinc and boron, and further preferably the one coated with tetraethoxysilane). The silica 1 and the alumina 2 have covalent bonds sharing the oxygen 3, and the spaces among the covalently bonded oxygen 3 and oxygen 3 act as intercalation zones 5 which is the absorbing and storing layer. In the ordinary state, the distance between the oxygen 3 and the oxygen 3 is about 2.3Å, but the distance between the molecules is expanded to 35Å.
