VARIABLE OPTICAL ATTENUATOR USING OPTICAL FIBER COUPLER

PURPOSE: A variable optical attenuator is provided to reduce loss of whole device in a low price by combining an optical fiber coupler. CONSTITUTION: V shaped grooves are etched into a silicon substrate. An optical fiber is arranged into the groove, and an optical variation part and an optical fiber coupler are connected. A glass panel is arranged on the grooves to fix the optical fiber. The optical fiber varies the strength of optical signals input into one end on a waveguide having grooves. The optical fiber coupler is connected to the other end of the waveguide where the groove ends, and divides the optical signals into monitor outputs for monitoring main and sub outputs for outputting optical signals. The silicon substrate and the optical fiber coupler are fixed by ultraviolet adhesive. By this configuration, the overall length of the waveguide optical attenuator can be reduced.
