Process for removing halogenated hydrocarbons from earth comprises lowering the surface tension of the ground water and the halogenated hydrocarbons by adding a mixture of anionic and non-ionic surfactants in concentrations below the critical micelle forming concentration. The halogenated hydrocarbons are then washed out of the pore space in the earth and pumped away.
