PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a fluorescent dye having fluorescent intensity suitable for diagnostic use by including a methine dye. SOLUTION: A methine dye of the formula is used. In the formula, R is a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or a substituted or unsubstituted aryl; Q is a methine or polymethine group having at least one substituent selected from a substituted or unsubstituted heterocyclic group and a substituted or unsubstituted aryl; V11 to V16 are each H or a monovalent substituent, provided that at least one of them is a group of -A-XSO3M1; A and X are each a divalent connecting group or a single bond; and M1 is H or a monovalent cation. The methine dye can be easily excited with a laser from an inexpensive helium-neon source and is useful as a label for a substance such as an antibody, a protein, a peptide, an enzyme substrate, morpholine, lymphokine, a metabolite, a receptor, an antigen, a hapten, lectin, avidin, a toxin, a carbohydrate, a polysaccharide, a nucleic acid, or a deoxyribonucleic acid. |
