PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bending machine and a bending method using this bending machine capable of bending with excellent work efficiency without executing a pull-back operation of a potentiometer used in a back gage. SOLUTION: When bending is applied to a work W under cooperation between a punch P attached to an upper table and a die D attached to a lower table, the work W is pressed against a potentiometer 27 provided in an abutting member 11 of a back gage and is positioned, thereafter the potentiometer 27 is withdrawn up to the position where it does not interfere with the work W by a potentiometer moving means 41 and then bending is executed.
