LITHIUM BATTERY AND ITS MANUFACTURE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lithium battery having a high capacity and long cyclic service life. SOLUTION: This lithium battery is composed of a positive electrode 2, a negative electrode 4 containing an active material capable of storing and releasing lithium ions, and a non-aqueous electrolytic solution or polymer electrolyte. The negative electrode active material contains particles of at least one of elements capable of forming a compound with lithium, having a melting point >=900 deg.C, and having a coefficient of thermal expansion <=9 ppm/K or less at room temp. and such particles are embedded in a carbonaceous substance formed into a plurality of layers and subjected to a mechanical processing so that the partical sizes become smaller than those in the initial period. This battery can be used in an electric automobile as a battery assembly.
