A carbonic anhydrase inhibitor and an ophthalmologically acceptable carrier are used in the manufacture of a medicament for topical application to the eye for maximizing the health of the optical nerve and retina, for increasing retinal blood flow velocity and for increasing optic nerve head velocity. The carbonic anhydrase inhibitor can be dorzolamide, acetazolamide or metazolamide.
