A system for monitoring the bearing temperatures of e.g. a 2-stroke IC engine incorporating a crosshead drive for the crankshaft via a connecting rod (7) employs temperature responsive sensors at the shell bearing surfaces (20) of each of the connecting rod (7) bearings. A boring (15b) accommodates a piston (18) biased towards the bearing (20) by a compression spring (17) and the piston (18) is retained in position by a fusible plug (16) of plastic, metal or other temperature sensitive material. The stem of the piston (18) provides a latch for a further spring-loaded (21) plunger (22) in the boring (15a) which when released by fusion of the plug (16) due to e.g. a bearing defect breaks a control connection (23) to result in engine stoppage.
