PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrain the damage of the edge outer circumferential peripheral portion of a catalyst carrier to be brought into contact with an elastic washer for elastically holding the monolithic catalyst carrier in the axial direction within a casing. SOLUTION: An elastic washer 21 comprises wiremeshes formed into an annular shape so as to be roughly in a rectangle shape in cross section in such a way as to be housed in the recessed groove of a cap 22 in a U-shape in cross section. The elastic washer 21 is disposed at a place to be projected further from the outer circumferential periphery of a catalyst carrier at its part at the outer circumferential side so as to be compressed in the axial direction. A first chamfering part 31 composed of an inclined surface and a second chamfering part 32 composed of an inclined surface, are provided for the outer circumferential side and the inner circumferential side respectively of an apex surface 21b. When temperature becomes high, the cap 22 is expanded to the outer circumferential side because of thermal expansion, the elastic washer 21 is also likely to move, but the provision of the chamfering parts 31 and 32 permits no tension force pulling the edge outer circumferential periphery of the catalyst carrier to the outer circumferential side to exist, the carrier can thereby be prevented from being cracked and damaged.
