PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply and easily obtain an amino-benzisothiazole derivative useful as a diazo component of azo dyes and a synthetic intermediate for an image formation compound used for color photography photosensitive materials in a diffusion transfer process at high yield by employing a specific aniline compound as a starting raw material. SOLUTION: By employing a compound of formula I (wherein, X is H or a substituent) as a starting raw material preferably via an intermediate of formula II, a 3-amino-2,1-benzisothiazole derivative of formula III is obtained. By making hydrogen sulfide gas act on the compound of formula I in the presence of a base (e.g. an organic base such as triethylamine, or the like) in a reaction solvent (preferably an aqueous solvent such as methanol) preferably at a temperature from room temperature to 60 deg.C, the compound of formula II is obtained. By the oxidative ring closure of the compound of formula II with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a base, the compound of formula III is obtained. The resultant compound of formula III can be isolated as a sulfonic acid compound e.g. by precipitating it by the addition of acid.
