The invention relates to a method for variably adjusting the brake force in a hydraulic brake system of a motor vehicle, said system consisting in producing a brake pressure which impinges upon a wheel brake device. The aim of the invention is to widely compensate for the decreasing brake effect in hydraulic brake systems. To this end, the actual coefficient of friction between the brake disk and the brake lining of at least one wheel brake is determined and compared with a defined theoretical coefficient of friction. If the actual coefficient of friction falls inadmissibly short of the theoretical coefficient of friction, the brake pressure or a value correlated with the brake pressure is increased to a value multiplied by a correctional factor provided that the actual coefficient of friction lies within a defined range of stabilization (1) of the coefficient of friction which comprises a plurality of coefficients that lie below the theoretical coefficient of friction.
