The invention relates to a method for producing trapping contours on colour edges in a page to be printed which exists in the form of digital data. These trapping contours reduce the defects that are caused by register errors in the printer. The method functions in a similar way to a filter, using a window that is moved over the entire page, picture element by picture element. Certain elements are selected from neighbouring elements of the central picture element and used to calculate a trapping colour. The colour separation proportions of the central picture element are compared with the corresponding colour separation proportions of the trapping colour. The result of this comparison then determines which colour separation proportions of the central picture element are changed.
