Process for manufacturing silica powder and use thereof for making an optical fiber preform

The sol-gel process makes use of a primary silica-based material containing chlorine . A process for the manufacture of powdered silica by a sol-gel method, involves the preparation of a water suspension of a primary SiO2-based material, gellifying the suspension and then drying the gel obtained. It is then fractionated to a powder containing SiO2 particles. The primary material contains chlorine. An Independent claim is also included for the use of the material.
