PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drying method, in which in the case of drying a monolithic refractory lined in a vessel for molten metal while irradiating with microwave, the constant drying rate period is shortened and the total time required for the drying can be further shortened in comparison with a reduced pressure microwave drying while irradiating with the microwave having the same output. SOLUTION: In the constant drying rate period, after heating the front surface temp. of the refractory to >=110 deg.C and the back surface temp. till becoming the preset reference temp. or higher by supplying the hot blast under the atmospheric pressure into the vessel, while continuing the microwave irradiation, the pressure in the vessel is reduced to 30-250 Torr quickly. Further, after the pressure gradient in the refractory becomes constant, the operation, in which the pressure in the vessel is returned back from the reduced atmospheric pressure to the normal atmospheric pressure and the hot blast is supplied, is repeated until the drying of the monolithic refractory is shifted to the falling- drying rate period, and during the falling-drying rate period, the pressure in the vessel is reduced to 30-250 Torr and the refractory is irradiated with microwave.
