PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic silica particle having excellent dispersion stability and magnetic separation, isolatable from a material containing a nucleic acid in high efficiency and with high purity, useful for nucleic acid binding in high productivity and to provide a method capable of isolating a nucleic acid from the material containing the nucleic acid in high efficiency and with high purity. SOLUTION: The magnetic silica particle contains a metal or a metal oxide composed of a multidomain and has >=0.1 m2/g and <100 m2/g specific surface area. The method for isolating a nucleic acid comprises a process for bringing the magnetic silica particle into contact with a material containing a nucleic acid in a solution for extracting the nucleic acid so as to bond the nucleic acid to the surface of the magnetic silica particle for nucleic acid binding, a process for separating the magnetic silica particle for nucleic acid binding bonded to the nucleic acid from the solution for extracting the nucleic acid by magnetism, and a process for dissociating the nucleic acid bound with the magnetic silica particle for nucleic acid binding from the magnetic silica particle for nucleic acid binding.
