<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a nonlinear optical device which attains high-speed high- efficiency operation by utilizing a nonlinear optical material formed by dispersing fine particles which are sufficiently smaller than the wavelength of light in a transparent matrix. SOLUTION: Light converging lens media 2, 3 are disposed near at least one of the light incident face side and light emergent face side of a nonlinear optical material 1 having nonlinear optical characteristics so as to inhibit the spreading of light emergent from the nonlinear optical material. The nonlinear optical material is preferably divided into plural dot or honeycomb regions with a heat sink 6 for promoting the release of heat from the material and the lens medium 2 is preferably disposed in such a way that the light is converged in each divided region.</p> |
