PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically set a slicing level and prevent a readout error from occurring by reading out predetermined data recorded onto a reference ticket when a main body is set in a slicing level setting mode and measuring a peak value of the data to set the slicing level at a predetermined percentage of the measured peak value. SOLUTION: After maintenance and checking operations for portions of an automatic ticket checking machine which influences readout of magnetic data are completed and the automatic ticket checking machine is set in a slicing level setting mode, a reference card C is inserted into the automatic ticket checking machine. The reference card C is transported along a transportation path L including a pinch roller P. During the transportation, data recorded on the reference card C is read out by means of a readout head H, and a readout processing circuit 1 including a CPU measures an peak value of the data. The readout processing circuit 1 automatically sets a slicing level at a predetermined percentage of the measured peak value, e.g. at a 30% level of the measured peak value. Thus, deviations of the readout head H as well as a magnetic data recording medium such as a riding ticket or the like are absorbed, and any irregular operations due to a readout error can be prevented.
