A coated quartz glass component, having an adherent and protective, visible light and IR transparent layer of aluminum oxide, is new. A coated quartz glass component has an adherent protective layer which comprises /-90 atom % aluminum oxide and which has /-90% transparency to visible light and infrared of up to 2 mu wavelength. An Independent claim is also included for production of the above coated quartz glass component by PVD or CVD of aluminum oxide or by application and then oxidation of an aluminum layer.
