<p>In a punch and die apparatus, a punch sub-assembly (10) and a die sub-assembly (12) are connected by guide assemblies (14). The punch sub-assembly (10) includes an aluminum punch shoe (16) that is connected to a ceramic punch (24) and that is flexibly connected to a stripper plate (18). The punch shoe (16) and the stripper plate (18) have respective guide assembly openings (28 and 30) that are separated on center-to-center distances of not more than seven inches. The die sub-assembly (12) includes an aluminum die shoe (44) and a die (46) with the die shoe having guide assembly openings (50) that are separated on center-to-center distances of not more than seven inches. The guide assemblies each include a leader pin (32) that is connected to a bushing (34) and a ball cage (38). The leader pin (32) is secured in a respective guide assembly opening (30) of the stripper plate, the bushing (34) is secured in a respective guide assembly opening (28) of the punch shoe (16), and the ball cage (38) is secured in a respective guide assembly opening (50) of the die shoe (44).</p> |
