PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify the assembling work of a rope hydraulic elevator using a differential hydraulic cylinder, and to simplify the mounting and demounting work of the hydraulic cylinder in the working. SOLUTION: In the installation of this hydraulic elevator, the weight of a balance weight 26 (including a sheave 22 when the sheave 22 for a pulley 21 is loaded on the balance weight 26) is supported by the holding devices 30, 31 in advance, and a hydraulic cylinder 1 is mounted from the lower side of the holding devices 30, 31, whereby the mounting work can be remarkably simplified. In the demounting of the hydraulic cylinder 1, it can be easily mounted and demounted by supporting the weight of the balance weight 26 by the holding devices 30, 31. Further by connecting a car 24 on an end part of the rope 20, the weight of the counter weight 26 is balanced, so that a thickness of a rod 4 of the hydraulic cylinder 1 can be determined not corresponding to the weight of the balance weight 26 itself, but corresponding to the balanced weight.
