A method of planting tubers (26 figure 4)including filling or part-filling elongate tubes 6 with soil lifted from a planting area. Seed tubers (26), preferably of mini-tuber size, are inserted into the soil-filled tubes after placing the tubes 6 onto the planting area. Also claimed is a method of harvesting tubers 35 by lifting the tubing 6 from the planting area, removing the haulm 33 from the tuber plants and gaining access to the tuber crop growing within the tubing 6 by cutting/splitting away the tubing 6. The tuber crop is separated from the soil and collected. Machinery for performing the above planting and harvesting methods is also claimed. The soil may be destoned and/or sterilised before inserting into tubes 6. The tubes 6 may be of plastics material, permeable to nitrogen and oxygen but substantially non-water permeable. A shot of water and/or fertiliser may be inserted into the tubes 6 at the planting stage.
