PURPOSE: A method for detecting a touch of a welding tip is provided, which judges if the welding tip touches a target using a variation in the location of the welding tip with the help of only a location sensor, to reduce the cost required for the detection. CONSTITUTION: While a welding tip moves from a search location toward a target at a uniform speed, it is detected if the welding tip reaches a touch checking position(S2). Upon the welding tip arriving at the touch checking location, a traveling distance of the welding tip is periodically calculated using a location sensor and then compared with a predetermined minimum value(S3,S4). The welding tip is judged to touch the target when the traveling distance of the welding tip, corresponding to a single period, is smaller than the minimum value(S5).
