PURPOSE: A fire retardant polyester film and a production method thereof are provided to have good fire retardant property, mechanical intensity and hiding property, and be suitable for cable coating application, electric application such as print circuit substrate, etc. CONSTITUTION: The film comprises three film layers. The first layer consists of copolymerized polyester resin having extreme viscosity of 0.4-0.9dl/l, which is 3-30 mol% of difunctional phosphor compound(formula 1) capable of forming ester bond in the skeleton. The second film is laminated on top of the first film, and contains polyester resin having extreme viscosity of 0.4-0.9dl/l and ethyleneterephthalate of at least 60wt%. The third film is laminated on bottom of the first film, and contains polyester resin having extreme viscosity of 0.4-0.9dl/l and ethyleneterephthalate of at least 60wt%. The method is comprised of: (a) providing melt sheet comprised of three layers; (b) cooling and solidifying the sheet to form non-extending sheet; (c) biaxially extending the sheet to form the polyester film.
