The voltage adapter has an input stage (1) for rectification and voltage amplification, especially of a mains voltage, at least one capacitance (5) electrically connected to the lamp (30) and that is discharged on ignition and a charging circuit (4) for the capacitance connected to the input stage. The charging circuit contains a high frequency converter receiving the input stage's output voltage and controlled by a pulse width modulator (8). A low inductance output stage (9) containing the capacitance feeds all the energy stored in the capacitance directly to the lamp without an intermediate choke.
