PILE AND METHOD OF DRIVING A PILE

The pile structure comprises a number of external helical fins along substantially the whole length of the pile. At least one of the fins has a wedge-shape cross section and all the fins are substantially parallel. The pitch of each fin is in the range 100 mm to 500 mm. Each of the fins can be hollow or solid. The pile can be driven into a substrate by applying a force to the pile substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the pile, the force having no rotational component about the longitudinal axis. The fins cause the pile to rotate in the substrate and thereby penetrate the substrate as the force is applied.
