A light fitting (10, Fig 1) for a double-ended tubular lamp 12 having terminals at both ends, comprises a housing (14, Fig 1) with lamp contact terminals (28, 30 Fig 6) for establishing electrical contact with the terminals of the lamp. A cover portion of the housing 24 is removable to allow a lamp to be fitted into the light fitting. Contact bridging elements (52, 60 Fig 6) on the cover portion 24 co-operate with contacts (42, 44 and 64 Fig 6) on the base of the housing to isolate each terminal (28, 30 Fig 6) from the electric supply when the cover portion 24 of the housing is removed. A rotatable member in the form of a turret 90 prevents the removable portion being replaced without a lamp in the fitting. The turret 90 can rotate between first and second angular positions. It is biased into the first angular position by a spring 101. In this position, an abutment 94 is engageable with an abutment 98 on the removable cover to prevent the cover being replaced. When a lamp is inserted into the light fitting, it engages a projection 94 on the turret causing it to rotate into the second position. In this position the projection 96 has moved out of the path of the abutment 98 so that the cover can be fitted to the housing. |
