PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for reading image that is capable of always performing good reading even in the case of a long photographic sensitive material having a joint portion and/or a gap. SOLUTION: When a discontinuing part is judged as joint portion or a gap of perforations is detected by a discontinuing part detecting sensor 49, an image frame on a position read when the discontinuing part interferes with a carrying roller pair 74 is predicted; and the carriage of a film 12 is switched to an auxiliary carrying roller pair 73 and the film 12 is read, when the discontinuing part is between the pairs 73 and 74 and a specified time has passed, that is, before a predicted image frame is read by a CCD line sensor 62.
