PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an emergency refuge device for escape of a passenger shut off in a compartment when an elevator stops due to power failure or other accident during its ascent and descent. SOLUTION: This elevator is provided with an emergency refuge auxiliary device consisting of a manual compression and pressure release device provided on an emergency window 31 of a compartment 30 of the elevator. The compression and pressure release device is provided with valves 20, 70 for compression or pressure release each connected with a hydraulic oil pipe 13 and a hydraulic mechanism 41. If the elevator cannot be operated due to accident or power failure, a force is applied to the compression and pressure release device manually to operate the valves for compression or pressure release, thereby raising or lowering a hydraulic cylinder 42 and raising or lowering the compartment of the elevator to a desired story.
