PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-density magnetic recording medium, especially as a high-density magnetic disk with high track density and high line recording density, having high electromagnetic conversion characteristics and excellent travelling durability, especially excellent seek durability and durability against temp. cycles. SOLUTION: In this medium, a base coating layer and a magnetic layer are formed in this order on a nonmagnetic supporting body. The magnetic layer is formed to <=0.2μm thickness, and the magnetic powder in the magnetic layer consists of ferromagnetic iron alloy power containing Co. An amt. of fatty acid esters extracted from the magnetic layer and the base coating layer with n-hexane is >=30 mg/cm3. The extract contains specified amt. of (a) fatty acid esters having 10 to 30 deg.C melting point, (b) fatty acid esters having <=80 cP viscosity at 0 deg.C, (c) fatty acid esters having 30 to 80 cP viscosity at 20 deg.C, and (d) fatty acid esters having >=30 cP viscosity at 40 deg.C. The abrasion volume with steel balls of the magnetic layer is 0.5×10-4 to 5.0×10-4 mm3.
