The end of the fiber (1) is held in a clamp or chuck (2) with the extreme end (3) so that it may be reached by the milling tool (5). The tool is cylindrical, with a flat end face, and rotates at from 20000 to 60000 rpm. It may be moved sideways and may be moved parallel to its axis to machine the end of the fiber.
